October is a special month at my favourite lighting shop, Seagraves & Dixon, with a fantastic store-wide sale across all products. As we’re edging closer to the end of the month, I thought it would be the right time to shine some light on this brilliant brand and give you all the chance to dash over there and grab a bargain while you can!
We were lucky enough to be approached by the fabulously knowledgeable Kelvin Dixon, who runs this well-established shop with his wife Kate and super-friendly troupe of staff, when the shop needed a refresh of branding, signage and all the trimmings. Seagraves and Dixon is an independent lighting specialist providing quality lamps and lighting for the home. Based in the heart of Penrith, and run by husband and wife team, Kelvin & Helena Kate, they take great pride in providing premium lighting products with exceptional customer service. The only thing that was letting this fantastic store down was it’s branding…
Looking for a refresh, Seagraves and Dixon had painted their shop front black & white and wanted something more contemporary and quality from their signage. They were moving away from the electrical market to focus on lighting, and none of their branding was cohesive: as you can see from the before shot – the main signage and side signage are unrelated.
We went through a series of concept designs looking at the shop as a whole entity and moving the branding on without alienating current customers. Here is an example of a concept previous to the final brand identity, in which you can see the lighting element coming to the fore.
Due to their great sense of humour and the personal aspect of their approach to retail, we felt that a quirky edge needed to exist in the branding, and also thought it was important to bring the product element to the logo to instill Seagraves and Dixon as synonymous with lighting in the customers mind.
We then developed the other aspects of the identity, through product labels, business cards and quality stickers, finally arriving to the Seagraves & Dixon website. Formerly, the website acted merely as a landing page site, but we wanted to create more of a showcase site to compliment the sophisticated yet personable approach the client has to their industry. We also suggested that the element of the area should be included to give the customer a sense of the locality. After a successful few months, we are happy to report that we are looking to branch the site into ecommerce in the future.

So remember, you haven’t got long to go and grab yourself some beautiful lighting and make your house feel like home again. Nothing is more welcoming in winter than the warm glow of lamplight shining through the windows (of course, an open fire and cheeky glass of mulled wine doesn’t hurt either…)
