Zero Carbon Cumbria

The Zero Carbon Cumbria website brings together business, council, communities and individuals to work together to reach the goal of Cumbria becoming a Net Zero Carbon County by 2037.

The brief

We were tasked with creating a brand, website and further communication tools that were vibrant, yet accessible on all platforms.

The brief requested a brand that appeals across a wide audience, which is engaging and accessible and a website designed to WCAG guidelines. This includes developing the site semantically and clearly aria labelling all sections, ensuring the colour contrast on background imagery and text is readable, adding alt and aria descriptions to images, buttons and links, accessible forms, and using rem font sizes instead of pixels for browser scaleability. We do accessibility testing using industry standard tools.

The team were particularly keen for their branding and overall feel to not sit within the ‘green-washing’ category. We therefore stayed away from green tones and creating something more grassroots, more rough, ready and energetic than the quiet calm of traditional greenwashing.

“I really appreciate the patience and flexibility you’ve both shown. Having you both felt more like having extra people in the team as opposed to a client relationship… I hugely appreciated your support… it kept me sane! Thank you for going the extra mile and bringing so much more to the process. I’m really happy to see it live today.”

Jaki Bell, Head of Marketing, Cumbria Action for Sustainability.

The project went on to win The Web Excellence Award for Best Environmental Awareness Site.
