In their own words… C-Art is Cumbria’s countywide visual arts programme, co-ordinated by Eden Arts. It features exhibitions, events and open studios with the sole purpose of promoting Cumbria’s rich creative talent. The highlight is the open studios and galleries event which will take place from 13 – 28 September. Over 150 artists, designers and independent galleries will open their doors to the public and numerous art and craft workshops, demonstrations and special exhibitions will take place.
This large-scale art event was recently the winner of Tourism Event of the Year at the Cumbria Tourism Awards 2014, which has coincided beautifully with a refreshing new take on the events ‘brand’. Previously, the website was very brand heavy, featuring the distinctive C-Art yellow throughout, but in talks with the Eden Arts director, Adrian Lochhead, and the team, it was decided that the whole site should be a lot more art focused. The site acts as a year-round directory for artists local to the county, and needed to show-off the sheer breadth and quality of the work included. We went for a darker ‘interior’ to the site, so that the work would provide the colour.
With the technical help of the coding genius of Arron King, we set about producing a much more interactive gallery-style site which combined the distinctive branding of C-Art with more of a focus on art itself. Arron has also made the site completely responsive to fit to any screen size and a full Content Management System has been developed for the Eden Arts team to use each year.
To mirror this clearer direction, we redesigned the catalogue for 2014 making the profiles more concise and self-explanatory, and the additional and associated events more prominent. New for this year, C-Art have included ‘C-Art in extraordinary places’ which showcases art in some of the more obscure and impressive locations throughout the Lake District. Also introduced, is ‘Young C-Artist of the Year’ to showcase emerging talent across the county.
We are looking to develop the Eden Arts suite of websites to create a level of consistency across the various projects in the future. This year’s C-Art Open Studios event takes place from 13 – 28 September. For more information, please visit www.c-art.org.uk Catalogues will be available from 9th July.
