From web design to brand identity, every aspect of our industry, and of course, our lifestyles in general should be streamlined with sustainability in mind. But how do we go about this?
Here are some general ways graphic design can be more sustainable:
- Use eco-friendly materials: This one is a pretty obvious one, but still, I find that cost can outweigh sustainable choices in the client’s budgetary breakdown. We must choose sustainable and recyclable materials for printed designs, such as recycled paper or paper from responsibly managed forests (which thankfully, many do now as standard). But how about considering alternative materials like bamboo or hemp paper? And then there’s the inks… opt for environmentally friendly inks and printing processes that minimise waste and reduce harmful chemicals. One of our local printers, HH Reeds are particularly good at this, opting for vegetable inks.
- Reduce paper usage: We LOVE print, but understand the need to embrace digital design and communication whenever possible. Utilise digital platforms, email newsletters, and online publications to share information and reduce paper waste, but equally when creating a physical document, make sure it’s one people will keep, reuse and refer to.
- Design for longevity: This is something we always try to do: Create designs that have a timeless quality, avoiding trends that quickly become outdated. By designing for longevity, we reduce the need for frequent redesigns and reprints, minimising waste and resource consumption.
- Minimise energy consumption: We can optimise digital design workflows to reduce energy consumption. Use energy-efficient devices and software, and turn off or put devices to sleep when not in use. Additionally, and in any workspace, we must consider using renewable energy sources to power those spaces.
- Consider the life cycle of designs: Think about the entire life cycle of a design, from creation to disposal. We can then design with the end in mind, considering how the design can be repurposed, recycled, or easily updated in the future. Both designer and client alike must take responsibility to avoid designs that are difficult to recycle or dispose of responsibly.
- Educate and raise awareness: We try to consistently use our design skills to educate and raise awareness about sustainability issues. Create designs that promote sustainable practices, encourage responsible consumption, and inspire positive change. We have many clients who are at the forefront of change, such as Another Way, Cumbria Action for Sustainability and Zero Carbon Cumbria.
- Collaborate with sustainable brands: We will try to seek out clients and projects that align with sustainable values and practices.
By adopting these sustainable practices, we can contribute to a more environmentally conscious industry and help promote a more sustainable future, together.
